2007 Legislation

The Virginia Sheriffs' Association (VSA) monitors all legislation that impacts the office of sheriff. By exhibiting a strong voice in the Virginia General Assembly, VSA helps define the responsibilities of law enforcement. House Bill 1738 - Domestic assault warrants; issuance of emergency protective orders

House Bill 2029 - Victim notification; may be made through Statewide VINE System or other similar electronic system

House Bill 2106 - Concealed handgun permits; fingerprinting

House Bill 2349 - Conservators of peace, special; strikes provision that they have authority in any city or county

House Bill 2362 - Law enforcement officials; exempted from local tax and license fees for one vehicle

House Bill 2372 - Senior Alert Program; created

House Bill 2413 - Concealed handgun permits; retired law enforcement officers

House Bill 2520 - Health records privacy; exceptions

House Bill 2646 - Emergency protective orders; issuance thereof and judge to provide protected person with forms, etc.

House Bill 3034 - DNA analysis; probation officer shall review Local Inmate Data System and report identity of offender

House Bill 3117 - Criminal Justice Services Board; increases membership bfor Committee on Training

Senate Bill 959 - Retired employees; removes exception for certain localities regarding provision of insurance

Senate Bill 971 - Sheriff's departments and regional jails; supplemental liability insurance

Senate Bill 972 - Victim notification; may be made through Statewide VINE System or other similar electronic system

Senate Bill 1121 - Police; expands authority thereof in civil matters

Senate Bill 1165 - Conservators of peace, special; strikes provision that they have authority in any city or county

Senate Bill 1166 - Retirement System; benefits for certain state and local public safety officers

Senate Bill 1298 - Criminal history record information; agency not required to collect when information is available

Law Enforcement

House Bill 1778 - Photo-monitoring systems; counties and cities may establish to enforce traffic light signals

House Bill 1986 - Parking; if parked in VDOT lot must abide by posted signs

House Bill 2084 - Law enforcement escorts; shall be considered emergency vehicles and exempt from obeying regulations

House Bill 2533 - Criminal warrants; authorizes sheriff or his deputy to issue

House Bill 2853 - Stun weapons; eliminates references to tasers throughout Code

House Bill 3045 - Safety inspection stickers and vehicle inspections; required for parked vehicles

House Bill 3132 - Victims of crime; employers to allow leave to attend criminal proceedings

Senate Bill 829 - Photo-monitoring systems; counties and cities may establish to enforce traffic light signals

Senate Bill 924 - Law enforcement escorts; shall be considered emergency vehicle and exempt from obeying regulations

Senate Bill 1140 - Scrap metal processors; establishes requirements regarding purchases of scrap metal thereby

House Bill 3034 - DNA analysis; probation officer shall review Local Inmate Data System and report identity of offender

Senate Bill 1047 - Southampton County Jail Farm; Board of Corrections to convey to Southampton County Sheriff's Office

Senate Bill 1069 - Drug and alcohol treatment program; local or regional jail may establish for inmates

Senate Bill 1293 - Clerks, sheriffs, etc.; localities exempt from paying fees for certain services

House Bill 2659 - Writ on judgement; sheriff to post copy thereof to recover specific property on party's door

House Bill 2955 - Temporary detention orders; licensed physician to complete in-person evaluation

Senate Bill 890 - Involuntary mental health commitment; emergency custody order to include transportation

Senate Bill 1082 - Courthouse security; increases costs in each criminal or traffic case in district or circuit courts
