Law Enforcement RetirementThe 2007 General Assembly has adjourned sine die with the passage of Senate Bill 1166 which provides enhanced benefits for deputy sheriffs. The bill, passed in the waning hours of the session, provides mandatory LEORS benefits for all deputy sheriffs by July 1, 2008. In addition, the bill provides a 1.85% multiplier for all sheriffs and members of the Virginia Department of State Police effective July 1, 2007. The localities have the option of increasing the multiplier from 1.70% to 1.85% for deputy sheriffs and local police officers effective July 1, 2007 at the expense of the locality.
This bill was successful in the late hours of the 2007 General Assembly because of the tremendous efforts of a number of members of the General Assembly. While the bill passed 98-0 in the House and 40-0 in the Senate, there are certain members of the General Assembly who deserve special recognition because of their efforts to ensure the passage of this bill: Senators Ken Stolle, Tommy Norment and Ryan McDougle, and Delegates Clarke Hogan, Terry Kilgore, Bill Carrico and Johnny Joannou. Delegate Lacy Putney cooperated to a large extent and presented the bill on the floor of the House for final passage.
The General Assembly also provided a 4% salary increase for sheriff’s office personnel effective December 1, 2007.
