History of VSI
The Virginia sheriffs, recognizing a need to enhance training and education opportunities for Virginia sheriffs, deputies, and citizens, created the Virginia Sheriffs' Institute (VSI) in 1981.

VSI is organized under 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Funds raised for VSI come primarily from associate members and citizens across Virginia who have displayed their willingness to support enhanced public safety and criminal justice.

Funding from associate members is used exclusively for training purposes pursuant to the tax deductible activities as approved by the Internal Revenue Service letter of determination dated August 25, 1981. VSI is registered with the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs and is recognized as a reputable charitable organization by the Virginia Better Business Bureau.

VSI is managed by an executive staff under contract with the Virginia Sheriffs' Association.
